| About Jon |
| Originally from New York, I spent a good portion of my first 18 years indoors playing ice hockey. At the age of nine my family moved out west to Arizona. Through hockey, I was invited to attend a boarding school in Colorado where I was introduced to the outdoors. Along with an amazing curriculum that incorporated the surrounding mountain environment into the learning process, I was also afforded my first opportunities to travel to wild places. By the time of my graduation I had canoed the Green River of Utah, interacted with migrating Grey Whales in Baja, and camped in grizzly country in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. These experiences motivated me to pursue a major course of study in Biology in college. In 1991 I graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. I then began my lack of a career and pursued triathlons for about a decade. During this time I moved to Lake Tahoe and added climbing, fly fishing, skiing, and any other outdoor pursuit I could find to my time filling activities. All of these endeavors opened my eyes to the amazing beauty of wild, pristine natural places. My girlfriend at the time (now my wife!) often heard me say, “If I were a photographer I would take a picture of that”. After seeing these amazing places with the clarity of a focused athlete, the simple beauty of nature had become engrained in my mind as a necessary ingredient to health and perspective in life. In 1997 I purchased my first camera and began to capture the visions I was experiencing. I spent two years learning the technical basics of photography. I sold greeting cards to pay for film, shot weddings, portraits, property, and anything else that paid. Ultimately, I became dissatisfied with my print quality from 35mm film. I made the move to large format film cameras and focused exclusively on the natural landscape. In 2000, I opened a loft style gallery in a warehouse in Stateline, Nevada. After a year and a half of building a reputation, I realized it was time to relocate the gallery. In 2001, with coaxing from my wife (“You’ll never look back and wonder, “What if?”.), we opened The Jon Paul Gallery in the premier shopping area in Lake Tahoe. We have never looked back. In ten years of doing business here in South Lake Tahoe I have built a collector base which spans all 50 U.S. states and more than 35 countries around the globe. I continue to pursue amazing moments in nature, and to compose singular images in a considerate well thought out manner. My large format equipment choices enable me to produce the finest most detailed prints possible. I continue to learn every time I compose an image, and I continue to strive toward providing my collectors with finished pieces that enhance their lives every day. Please join me as my photographic journey continues. Enjoy the View! JON PAUL |
